Build Your Edge: Daily Catch Play Matters More Than You Think (Advanced)

Kevin Siegrist |

Transform your throwing routine from warm-up to weapon with this simple, powerful system.

Most pitchers think of catch play as just a warm-up. A few lazy throws before practice. A way to get loose.

But here’s the truth:
Catch play is the foundation of everything.
It’s where you fine-tune your mechanics, sharpen your feel, and train your brain to compete when it counts.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the Daily Catch Play System—a flexible, high-performance routine built to help pitchers connect their training to game-day results.

🎯 Step 1: Catch Play with a Plan
Too many guys go through the motions. They throw just to throw. But great pitchers? They throw with purpose.

Before you even pick up a ball, ask yourself:

What’s the goal today? (Recovery? Bullpen prep? Maintenance?)

How much effort should I give?

How far am I throwing—and why?

What am I trying to feel or fix?

Every throw should have a reason behind it. That’s how you turn reps into results.

🔁 Step 2: Adjust Based on Season, Role, and Feel
There’s no one-size-fits-all routine. Your catch play should evolve based on the time of year, your role, and how your arm feels.

Here’s how I approached it:

Offseason: Build strength, explore new feels, clean up mechanics

In-Season (as a reliever): Stay sharp, manage recovery, stay ready

Pre-Bullpen: Ramp intensity, dial in focus

Post-Game or Light Day: Focus on feel and recovery

Remember: flexibility is key. The best pitchers know how to read their body and adjust. Self-awareness is key. Pay attention to your arm and body.

🧠 Step 3: Build Feel & Mental Cues
The best arms in the world don’t just throw hard—they should know themselves inside and out.

Use catch play to:

Lock in your personal cues.

Check in on how your body feels.

Sharpen command and control, not just velocity.

Less is more. Don’t overdo it. Fresh arms throw better.

📓 Step 4: Track It with the Position One Journal
Want to get better faster? Write it down.

The Position One Journal is built to help pitchers:

Log arm/body feel daily

Track throwing volume and intensity

Adjust routines for bullpens and game days

Stay healthy and consistent all season long

Simple truth: what gets measured, improves.

🚀 Want to Go Deeper?
This blog scratches the surface. In our Zoom sessions and 1-on-1 coaching, we go deeper into topics like:

Starter vs. reliever routines

High-output vs. recovery day adjustments

Long toss progressions

Mental prep before competition

Bottom line: Your throwing routine is your edge. Own it. Track it. Refine it.

This is where the real work starts.

Stay locked in. Stay curious. Keep building.

See you on the mound.
